White Wines

We believe one of the best ways to taste wine is with food

Palmina white wines are made to showcase the grape variety and the unique characteristics of Santa Barbara County. Although each wine and each vintage is crafted independently, generally the white wines are cold fermented in stainless steel and with little or no malolactic fermentation for a pure expression of the varietal and a superb complement to food.

How can one resist opening a bottle of wine whose varietal name translates to “whimsical”? Arneis is an ancient grape that hails from the Roero hills of Italy’s Piemonte region. Also translated as “rascally” or “a little crazy”, Arneis has a reputation of being a difficult and ornery grape to grow – one that will first test the patience of the grower and then the winemaker. But behind willfulness often lies artistic genius, and so it is with Arneis’ impetuous nature.

Arneis is a delightful aperitif, but also a wine with enough body and personality to hold its own with a wide range of strongly flavored food – prosciutto, pesto, grilled seafood… Arneis is also a white wine that will continue to evolve with a few years of cellar aging. Serve just chilled.

Malvasia Bianca 2012
Santa Barbara County

Malvasia Bianca first beckons with a gorgeous glint of pale gold in the straw-colored wine.  A virtual garland of orange blossom, night-blooming jasmine and a grassiness reminiscent of fresh olives leaps from the glass with a swirl, teasing into a belief that this is a sweet wine. But a first sip surprises with tangy essence of quince, key lime and newly picked white peaches.  This lean and bone-dry wine pulses across the palate with light and lively nuances of lime marmalade, kumquat and membrillo and loquats and then lingers with a crisp, stoney minerality and briny character suggestive of Malvasia Bianca’s seaside history.

Malvasia has great aromatics and a crisp finish, so pairs beautifully with the contrasting flavors of our featured recipe, Sweet & Salty Wontons.

Pinot Grigio 2013
Santa Barbara County

Pinot Grigio is one of the wine-loving world’s most popular wines, and perhaps its attractiveness is due to its versatility. This gregari- ous wine loves good food and good conversation and can hold its own as a delightful aperitif, a component to a meal or simply that well deserved glass of wine after a long day.

But to fully express its true varietal characteristic, Pinot Grigio must be grown in the right place, with a cool climate and superb farming. Otherwise, the wine is Pinot Grigio in name only. Santa Barbara County is one of those picture-perfect places for Pinot Grigio, which after all, is a closely related cousin to the finicky and particular Pinot Noir for which the County is quite famous.

Pale, pale gold in color, 2013 Pinot Grigio is crystal clear and brilliant in nature. A bouquet of citrus peel, wild arugula and honeysuckle tease the senses. A sip astonishes with crisp and refreshing acidity delivering white peach, Bosc pear and Fuyu persimmon flavors, all mingling with a stony, flinty character. Beautifully balanced, the wine lingers on the palate with nuances of nectarine and almond.

The low 12.5% alcohol and screwtop finish make this the perfect picnic wine. Enjoy with Spring Scallops!

Subida 2010
Honea Vineyard, Santa Barbara County

Currently a favorite of sommeliers, orange wines are atypical wines in look, mouthfeel and taste. Subida announces its presence with a hazy, golden, straw-like hue, and an intriguing visual “depth”. A swirl produces an astounding surprise, with fresh notes of apricot mingling with bay leaf, herbs and spice on the nose. Happy to be one again with oxygen, Subida enjoys time and swirling to fully strut its stuff. A sip first delivers dried peach and fig, and an astonishing texture that is velvety, weighty, light and zesty all at the same time. More herbal notes – anise seed, mace – mingle with honeycomb and hazelnut flavors. The finish has a pleasing and palate cleansing note of almond bitters. Fascinating, intriguing and somewhat wine-geeky, Subida will continue to evolve in the glass, in the bottle and in the cellar.

We recommend serving at cellar temperature. Subida pairs well with simple fish or chicken dishes that are herb-infused, or turkey breast with apricots.

Tocai Friulano 2013
Honea Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley

Wine Notes

$22 per bottle

Pale gold in color with aromas of agave, lemon zest, rose petal and Meyer lemon. The mouth feel is creamier than past vintages and reminiscent of lemon cream pie and toasted almond with a zesty bright finish that lingers on the palate for minutes.

Tocai Friulano slips perfectly into a Spring dinner with sprightly acidity and a nose as refreshing as the scent of meadow-grass after rain. It plays well with others, including the usually wine-unfriendly asparagus and artichoke. Con- sidering that the Friuli region boasts bountiful asparagus and artichoke harvests each year, it’s only appropriate that it also offer this vivacious varietal as a compliment.

Traminer 2011 - SOLD OUT
Alisos Vineyard, Santa Barbara County

Wine Notes

$30 per bottle

The wine appears “steely” with brilliant green-gold highlights. A swirl unleashes the perfumed aromatics for which Traminer is so revered. A flamboyant bouquet of honeysuckle, citrus blossom, lychee and fresh garden herbs entices a first sip. The palate is enveloped with fruit and floral notes, a snappy and uplifting texture and flavors reminiscent of Fuji apples, lemon drop, Asian pear, and lime. There is a crisp and lively acidity in this beautifully balanced wine, with nuances of hazelnut and flinty minerality on the refreshing finish. Delightful now, 2011 Traminer will continue to gain some complexity in the bottle over the next 1-2 years.

A delightful complement to spicy dishes of all nationalities! Our featured recipe is Ricotta Polpette.
